After speaking to some of our customers who ship a large amount of orders every day, we’ve come up with a list of the top 10 tips for making the process quicker and easier. Have a universally recognised procedure and schedule for doing your picking, packing and shipping – you want make sure all your staff are aware that this is how things are done, otherwise one small slip up could cause chaos. Doing everything in the same way and at the same time and will make things quicker and easier for you and your team. You should store your inventory in a way that’s easy to identify and access. By this, we mean having the product name on the shelves your products are on, or sectioning areas in your storage facilities, e.g. labelling section, or ailes as “T-shirts” and “Dresses” Pre-packing your most popular popular goods is a great idea. Make sure they’re already in the envelope or box so you only need to attatch the invoice and label. A minute saved per item really adds up. On that note, make sure your most popular items are always in stock, so you don’t end up disappointing your customers. Use your order management software to set reorder levels, so that when your stock goes below a set amount, it will automatically order more. Build and maintain good relationships with suppliers. Your loyalty or repeat custom could be the difference between stock arriving on time, and a supplier telling you they can’t fulfil your order this month, or getting a great price for an item you buy regularly and paying the full amount. Identify which stock to keep, and which stock to get rid of. You can use your order management software to check reports on what’s doing well and what isn’t. It might be time to get rid of stock that isn’t selling, no matter how much you might personally like it. Use your order management software to print shipping labels automatically. This eliminates the need to copy/paste customer details into a courier platform to print your labels. This not only saves time, but it also rids you of any human error, which if results in incorrect deliveries, could give you a bad reputation. You can use your order management software to automate a lot of the shipping process – printing invoices/packing slips/picking lists in bulk for example. The more you automate, the less hours required and less mistakes happening. Check and manage your inventory on a daily basis. You need to keep on top of everything and not let things slide. Don’t neglect it – if you keep your inventory in a separate facility, use your order management software to keep tabs on it, and try and visit daily or at least weekly to ensure operations are running smoothly. Don’t be on too many sales platforms. If you find that you’re struggling to keep track of a large inventory across multiple channels, it might be time to either stick to one or two, or integrate and order management software to help lighten the burden of inventory, if you haven’t already done so.
